Red Sox DFA Ramirez, activate Pedroia from DL

The Red Sox designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment. Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski says the move was manager Alex Cora's idea. Cora wanted to play Mitch Moreland at first and didn't think Ramirez would be effective coming off the bench.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will be activated from the disabled list Friday. The veteran hasn't played since undergoing a cartilage restoration procedure on his left knee in October.
