Carpenter homers in 6th straight, Cards top Cubs for split

Matt Carpenter homered for the sixth consecutive game and Paul DeJong hit a tiebreaking double in St. Louis' three-run ninth inning, helping the Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Saturday to split their day-night doubleheader.

Hader warmly received by Brewers fans in return

In his first appearance in a game since the emergence of his controversial tweets, Josh Hader was received warmly, with cheers and applause, by Brewers fans. "It means a lot," he said after Milwaukee's 4-2 win.

Matt Carpenter hit his 25th home run of the season, coming off the bench tonight. It's his 6th straight game hitting a home run, including one in Game 1 of the doubleheader this afternoon after hitting 3 on Friday. The homers in 6 straight are a Cards single season franchise record (Elias) while Carpenter's last 12 hits have all gone for extra bases, also a franchise record for the modern era (1900).

Baez, Maddon ejected in fifth inning (1:14)

Javier Baez and Joe Maddon were kicked out of the game after Baez got upset with home plate umpire Will Little on a check swing strike 3 call to end the fifth inning with two men on base and the Cubs tailing 1-0. Baez wanted Little to ask for help from the first base umpire but he was denied as Little did not hesitate on the call. Maddon came out to argue and was subsequently tossed as well. It's the first ejection for Baez in his career.

Cubs lefty Drew Smyly (Tommy John) will throw a simulated game on Sunday then probably one more next week before heading out to the minors on a rehab assignment. He's expected to join the bullpen in August but the Cubs haven't ruled out a start for him if its needed as he's able.
