Oh, and just like that the A's have cut the Mariners' lead for the second wild card to 3 games as the Mariners lose four in a row before the break. The A's were 11 games back of Seattle on June 15, but went 21-6 since then to climb back into the playoff race.

Astros beat A's 6-5 on bizarre play in 11th inning

Alex Bregman homered twice and his tapper just in front of the plate in the 11th inning led to a bizarre play that ended the game, as catcher Jonathan Lucroy's throwing error handed the Houston Astros a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Crazy finish in Houston. After Stephen Piscotty had homered to give the A's the lead in the top of the 11th, the Astros tied it and then won it on Alex Bregman's dribbler in front of the plate when Jonathan Lucroy throw to first base glanced off Bregman's helmet, allowing the winning run to score (upheld after a long review).

Be afraid, Seattle Mariners, be afraid. The Oakland A's are sizzling, winners of 17 of 21 now after blanking the Astros 2-0 behind Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino and Blake Treinen. Montas matched zeros with Gerrit Cole and averaged 96.6 mph with his fastball as he looks like a potential rotation weapon in the second half. The Houston bullpen then allowed two late runs..
