Cam Newton was looking forward to his annual Thanksgiving Cam Jam on Monday night so he could replace the bad taste of Sunday's 20-19 loss to Detroit with the smiles of 1,200 kids getting a Thanksgiving meal at Topgolf. A few of those kids asked why he didn't run on the failed 2-point conversion attempt. But the smiles and fulfillment of providing kids with a holiday meal they might not get, as Newton said, ‘'filled a need.''

Panthers tight end Greg Olsen: ‘'We've got to stop worrying about New Orleans. We've got to stop worrying about playoff pictures. We've just got to win a game.''

Graham Gano, who missed a 34-yard field goal and extra point in Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Lions, isn't the first kicker to have a bad game against Detroit this season. Panthers coach Ron Rivera reminded that Green Bay's Mason Crosby had one -- four field missed goals and an extra point in a 31-23 loss at Ford Field -- earlier this season. “Let's not forget the guy made a 63-yarder to beat the Giants,'' Rivera said of Gano. “So let's all calm down. There's a really good kicker in Green Bay that had a rough day, too. The next chance he had he went out and won the game for them. There's a lot of good lessons for all of us, as coaches, players and fans to learn from. This game is tough. Things aren't automatic. You have to go out and do it.''

Ron Rivera plans to send tape of quarterback Cam Newton getting his left leg rolled to the league for an explanation of why a penalty wasn't called. Officials on the field told him they did t think the hit was late or low.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he hasn't talked to Devin Funchess since the receiver dropped five passes against Detroit ‘'other than keep your head up and keep playing.''

Panthers coach Ron Rivera stands by decision to go for 2. ‘'At some point you have to score. Why not sooner rather than later?''

Newton and Rivera react to failed 2-point conversion (1:27)

Panthers kicker Graham Gano got no indication that his missed field goal and extra point played a role in Ron Rivera's decision to go for two at the end. ‘'I've been hitting the ball well,'' Gano said. ‘'Obviously it is a tough one to swallow.''

Newton's 3 TD passes not enough versus Lions (1:02)
Panthers lose on failed 2-point conversion (0:33)
Moore tightropes the sideline for 8-yard TD (0:22)

Panthers coach Ron Rivera on decision to go for two instead of tie: ‘'To win the game.'' He added: ‘'I think you go for two on the road to win the game. And that's what I did, at the end of the day. Let's just say the coin toss is gonna go in our favor -- what's to tell you we're gonna step 'em? So, why not go for two.

Newton threads the needle to Samuel for 12-yard TD (0:25)

Yes, Graham Gano missed a 30-yard field goal and an extra point. But Ron Rivera's decision to go for two and the win in the final two minutes seemed like a desperation move with the season on the line. Cam Newton missed an open Jarius Wright. The Lions won 20-19. Now the season feels as though it is on the line.

Cam Newton had a chance to be a hero. He missed Jarius Wright for the 2-point conversion that would have given the Panthers the lead.

Remember when Graham Gano was the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October? When he made a game-winning 63-yard field goal to beat the Giants? He's missed a 30-yard field goal and now an extra point, so with just under 10 minutes left the Panthers and Lions are tied at 13-13.

Cam Newton gets hit in his left knee and goes down. He stays down for a while but walks off. Taylor Heinicke is on the field. Doesn't look too serious on Newton. He returned for the next series, missing only one play.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Bad enough that Donte Jackson missed the tackle, but Luke Kuechly? Things not going well for the Panthers on either side of the ball.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

First, stunned Panthers' rookie wide receiver DJ Moore was run down on that 82-yard reception. Second, Cam Newton took a sack he shouldn't have on third down. Third, Graham Gano's short field goal hitting the upright and falling no good makes what should have been a positive possession for Carolina into a disaster.
