49ers coach Kyle Shanahan on the team's interest in WR Josh Gordon, who was traded to the Patriots on Monday: "Any time a good player becomes available on the open market, you look into all that stuff," Shanahan said. "By no means is it something you ever want to get desperate for. Like I said last night, I feel very good with the guys on our team but that's something that we looked into. Obviously, it went a different way... (The Patriots) did more than we did."

49ers S Jaquiski Tartt is day to day with shoulder stinger, according to Kyle Shanahan. Will be monitored as week goes on. Otherwise, Niners mostly came through Sunday's win against Detroit with just a few bumps and bruises.

49ers LB Reuben Foster is back in the building after his two-game suspension. Corresponding roster move has not been made yet. Team has exemption for a couple of days before it has to make a move.

LB Reuben Foster can re-join 49ers for all team activities beginning today. Team will need to make roster move to add him to 53. Much needed help for the defense's tackling woes. QB Jimmy Garoppolo said Foster also gives team energy boost

Sherman confident he's still a shutdown corner (1:03)

49ers hang on to beat Lions 30-27

Jimmy Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes, Matt Breida ran for 138 yards and San Francisco's longest TD run in four seasons , and the 49ers bounced back from a season-opening loss by beating the Detroit Lions 30-27 on Sunday.

It wasn't pretty but the 49ers' narrow 30-27 win against the Lions sure was necessary. For a team that has never made the postseason after starting 0-2, the Niners couldn't afford a loss to Detroit, especially with difficult road games against Kansas City and the Chargers up next. With a 66-yard jolt of lightning from running back Matt Breida and a fortunate defensive holding call on the Lions, the 49ers got the job done. But they must be better, much better, in all phases if they're going to slow down the Patrick Mahomes train next week at Arrowhead Stadium.

The 49ers have been sorting through their options by splitting time between running backs Alfred Morris and Matt Breida but it's starting to become clear that Breida gives them an explosive element that Morris simply can't. Breida just broke a 66-yard touchdown run that gave the Niners a 27-13 lead going into the fourth quarter. Morris is steady but Breida has more of the home run ability the 49ers lost with the knee injury to Jerick McKinnon.

The 49ers have a three-point halftime lead against the Lions but they should feel fortunate about it. They've been sloppy and though QB Jimmy Garoppolo has solid numbers (10-of-14 for 119 yards and a touchdown), he's been slow to get through his progressions and more gun shy than we've seen him in the past. He took four sacks in the first half, including three in the red zone and each one came after Garoppolo held the ball for a long period of time. The Niners will need to be far more crisp in the second half to finish this off and get their first win of the season.

A week after going one-for-four in the red zone, the 49ers' first trip inside the 20 Sunday against the Lions was a bust. Jimmy Garoppolo took two sacks and the Niners settled for another field goal. An on-going issue that has continued early here today.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch have always maintained they'll look into any option they believe can make team better. So no surprise Lynch says he's doing due diligence on Josh Gordon. Shanahan and Gordon were together for one season in Cleveland in 2014.That season, Gordon appeared in five games (was suspended for 10 for violation of substance abuse policy, missed one for violation of team rules.) He finished with 24 catches for 303 yards.

No surprise as 49ers GM John Lynch offers his standard response when asked about potentially available players. Lynch told some Bay Area reporters that he's doing due diligence on Cleveland WR Josh Gordon. The Browns intend to release Gordon on Monday unless they can find a trade partner first.

49ers DT DeForest Buckner had 2.5 sacks last week against the Vikings. He needs just one today to pass his 2017 season total.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is aiming for a bounce back performance today against the Lions after a rough outing last week in Minnesota.

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

49ers TE George Kittle is coming off a five-catch, 90-yard performance and should be in position for another productive day today against the Lions.

49ers inactives: WR Marquise Goodwin, OL Joshua Garnett, OL Erik Magnuson, DL Jullian Taylor, LB Malcolm Smith, OL Matt Tobin and OL Shon Coleman.

With WR Marquise Goodwin out with a calf injury, the 49ers will start Dante Pettis opposite Pierre Garcon. At right guard, coach Kyle Shanahan said rookie Najee Toran is likely to get the start but Mike Person will be monitored up to game time before that decision is made.
